Chapter: Earth in the Solar System – Important Points

 

Universe

The universe consists of innumerable stars, planets, satellites, comets and galaxies.

It is infinite and continuously expanding.

 

Stars

Stars themselves emit light and heat.

The Sun is also a star.

 

Constellations

Groups of stars that appear in a particular shape.

Example: Saptarishi Mandal .

 

The Sun

The center of the solar system and the main source of energy.

All planets revolve around it.

 

Planets

Celestial bodies that revolve around the sun and do not give off light themselves.

 

There are eight planets:

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.

 

Trick to remember: "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Noodles"

 

Earth

The only known planet with the presence of life.

Life is possible due to water, atmosphere and suitable temperature.

Earth is third from the Sun.

 

Satellites

Celestial bodies orbiting the planets.

The Moon is the natural satellite of the Earth.

 

Comets

are made of ice, gas and dust.

They appear with tails and shine brightly when they come near the Sun.

 

Meteors

Pieces of rock or metal falling from space towards the Earth.

They burn due to friction in the atmosphere and are called "shooting stars".

 

Galaxy

A huge system made up of stars, planets, gas and dust.

Our galaxy is called the Milky Way.
